“Are we going on a field trip today!?” This is often the excited question of LCEC elementary afterschoolers as they race to greet their program staff each Monday.

Throughout the fall and winter, each of our elementary classrooms has visited the UW Arboretum three times through a generous grant from the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin. Young people looked for wildlife tracks and scat, went birding and leaf-peeping, used microscopes to look at organisms in a pond, used iPads to capture pictures of their findings, and more.

Students always look forward to their next trip to the Arboretum, and fortunately the grant allows for three more visits for each classroom in both the spring and summer. In the coming weeks, kids are excited to look and listen for new wildlife, flowers, and other signs of spring!
